Technology Overview

Five-wire resistive is the most accurate and reliable touchscreen technology. 5-Wire Resistive touch technology consists of a glass or acrylic panel that is coated with electrically conductive and resistive layers. The thin layers are separated by invisible separator dots. When operating, an electrical current moves through the screen. When pressure is applied to the screen the layers are pressed together, causing a change in the electrical current and a touch event to be registered. 5-Wire Resistive touchscreens typically have a 3H or 4H hardness rating which means that they will resist scratching from items with pencil point hardness.

Advantages:

High touch resolution

Pressure sensitive, works with any stylus

Not affected by dirt, dust, water, or light

Continued operation even with a cut coversheet (as long as the ITO coating on the glass is not damaged)

Could be operated in the environment with -10° C ~ 60° C

More durable and offer a much greater lifetime and stability than 4-Wire Resistive type

Disadvantages:

80% clarity

Resistive layers can be damaged by a sharp object

Glass is obviously fragile and can be easily broken with a small impact

More expensive than 4-Wire Resistive type

Technology Overview

Offering excellent durability and resolution, resistive technology is used in a variety of applications and environments. Resistive touchscreens consist of a glass panel with a coating of uniform resistivity, plus a polyester cover sheet which is tightly suspended from the top of the glass and separated from it by small, transparent insulating dots. The cover sheet has a hard, durable coating on the outer side, and a conductive coating on the inner side. When touched, the conductive coating makes electrical contact with the coating on the glass, and a touch is registered by the analog controller.

Description

TC405/851 Evaluation/Demo board for Optrex F-51405 & F-51851 LCDs. The TC405/851 controller supports Optrex F-51405 and F-51851 Series 240x64 COG Monochrome STN Graphic LCDs. This controller allows user to individually control each display pixel. This independent pixel control allows displaying both text and pictures simultaneously. The TC405/851 uses an ATMEGA32 microcontroller and a 4M bit AT45DB041B Flash. The microcontroller can be reprogrammed at any time by using AVRISP device. This board requires a single regulated 5 VDC supply to be plugged into J5 connector (bypass voltage regulator) or 7-20 VDC power supply to be plugged into J8 or J9 (optional) connectors.

TC405/851 includes a CD-ROM with supporting documentation (one per order) and DB-9 to 10 pin IDC adapter cable.

Technology Overview

The Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) technology is one of the most advanced touch screen types. The technology is based on two transducers (transmitting and receiving) placed for the both of X and Y axis on the touch panel. The other important element of SAW is placed on the glass, called reflector. The controller sends electrical signal to the transmitting transducer, and transducer converts the signal into ultrasonic waves and emits to reflectors that are lined up along the edge of the panel. After reflectors refract waves to the receiving transducers, the receiving transducer converts the waves into an electrical signal and sends back to the controller. When a finger touches the screen, the waves are absorbed, causing a touch event to be detected at that point.

Because the panel is all glass, there are no layers that can be worn, giving this technology the highest durability factor and also the highest clarity. Compared to resistive and capacitive technologies, it provides superior image clarity, resolution, and higher light transmission.
This technology is recommended for ATMs, Amusement Parks, Banking and Financial Applications, public information kiosks, computer based training, or other high traffic indoor environments.

Anti-glare SAW touch screens (G series) are available: typically designed for outdoor application or strong-light environments greatly, reduce the light reflected to the eyes from the surface of the touchscreen to protect your eyes and increase the clarity of the display.

Dust-proof and water-proof SAW touch screens (W series) are available: can protect the reflective grating and the transducers from the water and the dust.

Disadvantages of Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) technology:
